It's actually a double whammy on why they aren't shippable to the mainland: a combination of fruit fly (which is a pod surface concern), and other pests that are endemic to the fruit pulp (interior pod concern).

There is also black pod (phytopthera) on the big island, which so far hasn't made it to any of the other islands--another good reason not to move the fruit around.

There are plenty of cacao pods here, but once picked they deteriorate rapidly. You cannot ship any fruits/veggies, although I would think the pod minus the insides might be OK.
If you want split open pods let me know, I'll send them priority mail

Even if you can find a friend in HI who's growing cacao, they can't legally send a pod to the mainland. And naturally I would never advocate smuggling :-)

Of course, this only applies to fresh fruit. I've never tried to find a dried cacao pod, but clearly they're out there...

You can easily find fermented dried seed from several online sites such as http://www.chocolatealchemy.com

Intact pods are pretty much impossible to get in the mainland US, so unless you have a friend coming back from latin america or africa soon, I wouldn't be too hopeful on that front...

I would like to find a couple of cocao pods as part of my demo for chocolate tastings, can anyone tell me where I might find them? I am in the states and my tasting is in 2 weeks, so I don't have much time! I'd also like some beans roasted and not and then nibs, just to show the progression from start to finish. Thanks for your help!!
