Didn’t think to ask until just now – did any of you attend the PMCA this week? Jaques Torres apparently was at last night’s dinner (i was unable to attend the dinner).

So you are a member? I briefly looked at the site, and there’s too much to read right now. Looks interesting, though, so I will reserve it for a late night [:)]

Me? sure am..It’s really an organization set up to support general confections production, from low end to high end. It draws probably 80% from US sources, but we get membership and participation from all over the world.

With the exception of the US, where would you say the greatest proportion of participation comes from? Have you noticed a recent spike in interest from Asian countries, such as Japan?

Yes, looks like it.Was amazed to read about 100% chocolate cafe in Tokio – they, among the other stuff, sell 56(!) single origin chocolates from all over- http://www.wallpaper.com/print.htm?a=592. Anyone from Japan – or been there recently? -tell us more, please

Japan has long had a strong history of chocolate. Morinaga is very active in consumer chocolates at the moment.

Alex, here’s a link in original japanese – http://open.meiji.co.jp/sweets/choco-cafe/. They even had a neat idea of one chocolate square numbered for each day of the year.

This tool can translate between Japaneese and English:

It’s a beta version so I’m not sure how it works.

wow! that looks like an interesting site. have to read into it a bit. thanks, ellie.
i didn’t find out a whole lot from my japanese friend other than that japanese don’t have the affinity we do to chocolate in her opinion. she says it’s due to the fact that japan is warmer than germany for instance.

Well, there weren’t exactly any Japanese explorers exploiting South America of its cacao crops either ;) But anyway, chocolate’s popularity is growing quite steadily in Japan. Many Japanese chocolatiers, such as Hironobu Tsujiguchi (Le Chocolat de H), are producing chocolate that rivals the best of Europe’s. There are many more, but I’d have to pool together all my sources first.

Oh, go here for Le Chocolat de H:

Sensational packaging, and the chocolate itself looks too gorgeous to eat.

Yes, we might have done that. It stared with PMCA participation from outside USA and a few speculations (E.g. Asia and Japan etc).
