about a week ago i found this bar at a shop and decided to try it. so far it hasn't given much pleasure. the taste is all right, but has a soft "slide". i can't really describe the sensation very well and i used to associate it with soy lecithin. wrong or right? i don't know.

this "slide" is tasteless to bland and almost a bit sharp and "slippery", reminding me of what i get when i drink a coke or something with sweetener in it. does anyone know whether soy lecithin has any effect on taste or texture, etc.?

anyway: i'd discount the bar for this quality.

This is a good example of what I mean by quasi-good (or whatever I said) chocolate. Wrapping seems nice, presumingly high quality chocolate, but nothing much really and money better to be spent on a Mars bar.

*lol* yes, very true, lone :-) and the packaging wasn't even very nice. but the price...whew! really not worth it at all.
there are times when i actually just throw chocolate away.

ugh! just tried a bit more. there's something there that just sends shivers down my spine. yech!

maybe it's the "natural" vanilla? (again, i don't know what that is supposed to mean)

Don't tell me that! I have two bars of Galler 70% hehe. I also have two bars of Galler 85%, which is a really good 80%-range chocolate. Try to get this one if you can. Maybe I'll chop up my 70% bars and use them in ice cream :)

Oh, they won't. I haven't heard a lot of praise about this bar anyway, but I figured that I should try it anyway, especially since it was given to me as a gift.

I finally tried the Galler 70%, and it isn't that bad, actually. Immediaitely, by the smell and initial flavors, I could tell that mainly bulk beans were used for this bar, but it seems that Galler did a good job in hiding the bitterness, as this bar has none at all. It has that distinctive "candy" smell that so many other predominantly Forestero bars bear, and the taste is there to match. There really aren't any flavors that stick out; it's rather plain and almost one dimensional. The texture is pretty smooth with no grittiness at all. The finish is more satisfying than the melt, actually, and is a bit dry, which I welcomed kindly due to the lack of character this bar possesses. Also, the dry finish helped to accentuate the overall chocolate flavor that the texture seemed to mute out. It has a slight earthiness at the end too. Overall, it's not the worst bar in existence; it is definitely a suitable every day eating chocolate, but I certainly wouldn't go out of my way just to purchase this. Galler's 85%, otoh, is much better and is among my favorite 80% chocolates, although it is a bit flat.

Alex, how much did you pay for your bar? The price tag on mine was a hefty $4.75, which indeed does not match the bars integrity. However, I would glady pay that price for the 85%. Agreed, the packaging isn't the best either. I feel so much more special if I buy a bar in a box rather than one in a paper wrapper. Once again, it's the whole psychological aspect that comes into play: the fancier the packaging, the higher the expectations. I really like Slitti's packaging, actually, with the cellophane wrapping and gold-trimmed cardboard. Real classy, but unfortunately, his chocolate isn't that complex, but it is of good quality.

I'm assuming this bar is for one who seeks to quench their chocolate craving and for one who does not want to be confronted with a barage of flavors that overwhelms them.

Alex, did you taste a heavy vanilla flavor in this bar? Every time I eat it, vanilla practically screams to me, but then it finally tapers off into a more pleasurable and robust finish, which imo, is the most appealing aspect of this bar. I think the sharpness is a red berry fruitiness at the beginning and the dry finish at the end.
