OfflineI have tried Ancones, Ilha Toma, Mangaro and Conception, and it seems they all have a certain “Cluizel-taste”; something like a weak liqour/citrus/cherry/banana. It is very prominent in Ancones (which is what really makes it great), but in the other chocs it is slightly annoying, because it kills the more subtle flavours and make them taste rather similar.

OfflineIf you ask me, there’s a slight sweet fruitiness like a sweet orange that’s pretty common among all five. The liquor nuances are also present. It’s definitely easy to distinguish these bars from other chocolates because I think Cluizel has that certain feel to it that, if you eat enough, you can recognize instantly. This consistency is what I really appreciate about his line too.

Offline… whereas the blends seem to me to always have a sweet almond note, but still with that same consistency, which seems drier to me than many others.
Interesting that Cluizel is a lot more popular amonst chocolate eaters than it is among the trade, chefs, etc. They should catch up!
You might have noticed we don’t have Cluizel in the shop at the moment, for various reasons and then because of the summer – this means I am personally deprived and it is months since I had any!!!!! (OK, I’m eating Eclats de Cacao right now, but this is not the same).

OfflineI have no idea how it tastes because I just learned about it last week. To get an idea, I suppose one could just imagine Mangaro (in all of its wonderful grape and lemon fruitiness) with milk added, which is essentially what it is (or at least I’m assuming). Cluizel is ceasing production of the Java bar? Where and when did you hear this?
Has anyone tried the new batch of Concepcion? I hear it far exceeds previous batches. I’ve tried newer bars of Noir Infini, and they taste better than older ones; it’s not as citrusy this time, and the bitterness seems to have been reduced slightly.

OfflineI think I read about the Java here! We’ll be getting new stock of everything in September, so I will post comments then.

I think the new single plantation bar is from somewhere in Indonesia. In the pages of Cluizel, which are under construction, there is a fifth single plantation bar called Marumi, written in purple. I don`t know if this is the purple one that Montegrano mentioned, but I don`t know where Monte got his info on the purple milk Mangaro. Maybe they will launch this Marumi as well.

OfflineMarumi is a plantation in New Guinea, and the packaging should be pink, not purple. It hasn’t been released yet. Go to http://www.echocolates.com and look at the “bars” section to see the Mangaro milk (the purple border). That web site is Vintage Chocolate’s web site, the US importer of Cluizel. So technically, there are five plantation bars out (if you include both Mangaro bars), with Marumi being the sixth whenever that’s released.

OfflineOh happiness! The local candy store has got in a bunch of Cluizel chocs, among them the fantastic Los Ancones.
Yesterday I tried the 72% Amer; and it was a mix of the traditional banana/liqour taste from the single origin Cluizel bars, and some forasteros in the background. Not really sure if it was interesting&complimentary or just an annoying crash, but at least I got to confirm the “Cluizel style”.

OfflineIs there a particular Cluizel ‘style’? Do you mean flavour/taste? I use to recognise a certain ‘signature’ in most Amedei and Domori bars (and some plastic-like flavours in Slitti’s too), but I don’t think Cluizel’s are that easy to identify. Los Ancones and Ilha Toma are very different in my opinion, and their 85% too.

OfflineYupidupi – Cluizel bars seem to have a certain taste style in common, a taste of liquor/banana/red berries.
Other manufacturers also seem to have a certain style: Valrhona has an acid/red berries/slightly spicy style, Marcolini a more dark mocha style and Amedei a raisin/liqorice style.
In fact, these styles are in my opinion so pronounced that the variations between the manufacturers are larger than the variations betwenn the different bars made by the manufacturers themselves, even if their different bars are from very different places on the planet.
Artisan du Chocolat in London seems to be the one who best preserves the beans own style, without imposing a distinct manufacturer style.

OfflineFor me los ancones tastes like “duc” olives (think it is correct). These are fresh, very crunchy green olives that have a milder taste than the normal green or black. Quite amazing if you have never tried them. fOr those of you in the UK, the fresh olive co sells some every week at Borough market (where we are too).
Anyone tasted Maralumi?
We have received samples of pralus,Felchin and El rey… big tasting next week! Any tip from for Forum on tastes of some of these?
