I'm new to the forum, so apologies if this topic has already been discussed. I live in New York and buy my Valhrona at Fairway (a New York mecca for fresh, whole, and some gourmet food). Recently, while stocking up on Guanaja, I noticed a new 70% bar, called "Oriol Balaguer 70%." There was a notice touting Oriol Balaguer as the latest last word in the world of fine chocolates (Fairway is, unsurprisingly, its only importer in the US). All I was able to divine from the packaging is that Oriol Balaguer is a Spanish chocolate maker (the address was in Barcelona); the ingredients listed included 70% cocoa, sugar, lecithin, vanilla. To be sure, I succumbed, though the price was forbidding (nearly twice the price of a single bar of Guanaja). It's a nice chocolate, with no lingering bitterness and a very nice reddish color. Does anyone know anything about Oriol Balaguer?

All I know is that Oriol Balaguer is a Spanish pastry chef whose products can only be purchased in Spain. His truffles are supposed to be excellent, and his shop is allegedly pretty extravagant. I've heard nothing but good things about him, and some even claim that his chocolate is better than Cluizel. If this is so, then I have to try it. I suppose you're very lucky to get this bar, and now I'm somewhat jealous. How much did you pay for it, btw? Where exactly in NY is Fairway? I was in NY this past week, and I visited many chocolatiers and returned with a lot of goodies. The name Fairway doesn't ring a bell, but I suppose since I saw so many stores that only the ones with more memorable names, such as Condomania, would be easily remembered. Do you think you might be interested in doing a trade?

Fairway is on Broadway, close to the 72nd St. stop. It's everybody's favorite supermarket. It has fresh produce and a great selection of cheeses, fish, oil olives, etc. The chocolate selection is o.k. (so far, Valhrona was their top shelf).

Today I got two more of the Oriol Balaguer's 70% bars, if you're interested. In addition to the 70%, they also have a large selection of OB confections (I'm eyeing a saffron-flavored "chocolate", but it's only 37%...).

(I'm not yet sure how this works, but I think you can use a button that lets you email me directly.)

Your E-mail address is not provided in your personal information section, so if you want, go ahead and click on my name to obtain my E-mail. Are you looking specifically for Domori, and have you visited other chocolate stores and boutiques in NY? I can recommend some places to get good chocolate.
