I saw this stack of 8 single origin bars at my local Trader Joe’s. It contains about 4/5 pound of dark chocolate of varying percentage bars. The origins are Venezuela, Tanzania, Papua New Guinea, Dominican Republic, Peru, Ghana, Ecuador, and Sao Thome. It was relatively cheap (only 10 dollars) and makes no mention of alkalinized cacao in the ingredients list, which is required in the US.

I have not tried any of the bars yet, but I was wondering if anyone had heard anything about this stack? Kinda looks like a cheap knockoff of Pralus’ “Pyramide.”

Tried it. Don’t even bother. I seriously doubt these cacaos are of differing origins. Based on the taste, I have a feeling they used Chocolove, as the flavour profiles are so similar among the 8 bars and are characteristic of that maker.

I have a feeling that either Trader Joe’s simply added 2-3 cacao beans of the labeled origins to each batch and perhaps varied cocoa butter ratios and/or roasting times slightly.

argh….

Look at the labeling and my guess is that you’ll find that the TJ bars aren’t made by, but “for” them. (As for the source of the chocolate, the lineup smacks of a certain Belgian concern. Chocolove is a remelter of Belgian chocolate–not a chocolate maker–so any similarities will be more than coincidental.)

Well,

I found a use for these chocs. I simply broke up all the bars, melted them down, and coated some raw almonds with the mixture before dusting them off with some askinosie cocoa powder.

Not bad…not bad at all :)
