Hi,

Trader Joe’s (in the US, not sure if they’re in other countries yet), sells a giant 72% dark chocolate bar, called “The Pounder” or something like that. It’s imported from Belgium. It’s quite inexpensive and I’m wondering if anyone’s tried it? (I almost just bought it but didn’t want it to waste it if it was bad, and decided to just buy a regular-sized bar of Valrhona, which they also carry, since I’ve had it before).

Just wondering…

PS. New user! Nice to meet you all! I’m excited to see such a great, knowledgable group dedicated to one of my favorite things in the world!

OK, I tried it…

First the basics: It’s called “Trader Joe’s Pound Plus.” It’s 17.6 oz (500 g) and costs $3.99 US. 72% cacao content, ingredients are cocoa mass, sugar, cocoa butter, soy lecithin. As mentioned, it’s imported from Belgium, although it doesn’t give the name of the manufacturer.

Now I don’t think I have a very “refined” palate, but I did enjoy this bar. It has a good chocolate flavor with very low bitterness, nice crisp break, creamy texture with only a hint of graininess. I’m not tasting a lot of complex “overtones” that you get with better chocolate, but no off notes either. Just a good straightforward chocolate taste. Probably intended more for cooking and candymaking but I think it makes a nice snacking bar that will last a LONG time… at a low price, of course. :-) The only problem with eating it is the difficulty in breaking off squares and then biting into very thick pieces… should probably use a sturdy knife, but I’m lazy. :-)

Hi,

I’m a fellow beantown chocolate addict ;). To comment on the 72% TJ bar, I remember trying it, and thinking it was Ok, nothing spectacular though. As long as you’re at TJ’s, may I recommend picking up Chocovic’s Ocumare bar… it’s reasonable priced, and one of better bars TJ’s carries, in my opinion.

Also, as I can see from your other post, you already know of cardullo’s in harvard sq. For another place that has a much smaller selection, but cheaper prices, try christina’s in inman square.
