I have received a message from the newest member here – which I believe is a scam – used to be something that was sent to all commodity trading companies in the late 80′s / early 90′s.
Not sure how to report this member so have just sent an e-mail to moderators and also posted a warning in case others receive the same e-mail about $6.5 million!!

for safety’s sake i would not in any case reply to the message to prevent any involvement in a scam.
much has been written about this type of scam and it is best to delete the message or pass it on to an agency that deals with such matters.

I’ve deleted that user again – didn’t think to check the IP before that. Will try next time. If it’s any consolation, we’re getting a spate of fake orders from Ghana using US credit cards, so you’re not the only ones suffering!
We’d like to engage with cacao producing countries, but this is not exactly what I had in mind…

Ok, to stop this becoming a flood, new members now require approval by me before they are allowed to join. Painful, and it may mean some delays joining, but I think it’s the only way. Obviously we don’t want to put members off because they’re receiving this kind of junk.

I’m now filtering out the obvious spam members. I’ve just approved a few who don’t have many details in their profile. Please keep an eye open for any problems or rogue emails. If we still get problems, we might have to require more profile details before approval.

I’ve received three e-mails from jessi kole Abidjan, Ivory Coast West Africa:

Looks like this was a ‘sleeper’ spammer – they registered Nov 2006 before we really started filtering registrations. (Only about 1 in 20 are now genuine).
Strange they decided to spam email now.
That user is now deleted and apologies to everyone who received the email.

Same here…just chiming in. At least the spammers had the decency to customize the story to ‘wealthy cocoa merchant’. Not the most believable tale in the world, but at least they looked at the site they were spamming :-)
