Question:
When companies that don’t work directly with growers buy cacao beans…how do they do so? are there certain cacao brokers? and if so how does the system work? also, are there different grades of beans at different prices? what is the minimum you can buy? any help would be great….thanks

the average cocoa grower has less than 1/2 acre and a handful of trees, and no infrastructure. There are upwards of 1 million individual growers in the ivory coast alone…

So how would a small chocolate company go about buying premium grade cacao beans? Thanks for your help…

well, that’s what i’m saying – it’s difficult to go direct to the grower. there are some larger plantations in c and s america that you may be able to hook up with if you can find them, or more likely you’ll have to find a distributor to work through…

all are brokers. assuming you’re fairly small, you might have a hard time with them. one tactic might be to exploit the recent japenese pesticide regs, and indicate to these brokers that you’re willing to take a rejected load (believe me, it’s not a bad deal – it has to do with some crazy japenese legislation putting bizarre regs on pesticide limits… net/net many importers are left with loads that historically have been considered ‘gold standard’, but now they can’t do anything with them and are stuck)

or you could go to someone like john at chocolatealchemy and work with him
