Hi
I understand that cacao had some importancs among the… hmm… aztecs or mayans? Are there any myths associated with chocolate? Any gods or monsters? If anyone has read “the True History of Chocolate”, there may be answers therein… Just curious.
Thanks
Kyle

Aha, I’ve finally done some research into this, and can in part answer my own question:

Quetzacoatl: Aztec god, in the form of a plumed serpent, said to have brought cocoa seeds from heaven and taught people how to grow the cacao tree.

Ek Chuah: Mayan god, patron of merchants, protector of cacao growers.

Huitzilopochtli: Chief Aztec god, who demanded blood sacrifice. Village elders / priests would appoint victims during certain celebrations. If they showed signs of melancholy, they were given a drink of cacao, water, and blood (from the water the sacrificial knives were washed in). The victims were calmed and cheered by this, and returned to the celebration as if nothing had happened. Later, of course, they would die with a belly full of good chocolate!

hopefully this is of some interest to someone,
kyle
