Elektra suggested we post our message here, so here goes………..

We are two friends thrown into a situation borne out of necessity. Having dreamt the dream for many a year the door has been opened but do we walk through?

We have the option on a premises which would lend itself to a retail shop for all things associated with chocolate. We would need something other than foot-fall to guarantee earnings so, things like wedding favours / corporate gifts / home deliveries etc. are things we are researching.

So CoCoa of Edinburgh has been superb, [many thanks for your time Lida!]

If anybody else has any pearls of wisdom or advice, we would be eager to here from you. What sells best? What does not?!? We look forward to your comments [:)]

let’s hear it for the girls!

can’t really offer sound business advice, however. i’m probably the last person you’d want to do that.

aw shucks! my two cents anyway: diversify, but don’t over do it! catering to all will dilute your product.
make sure you take the summer months into consideration! instead of chocolate some homemade ice cream perhaps?
and in the winter invite LoneLy to make some of her hot chocolate :-)
i’d set up some principles that i could more or less stick to as well.

As to the less than ideal footfall, I think that punters are more than willing to travel to a specialist shop, in search of something the average High Street cannot offer. Wish you were opening up somewhere in Surrey, I could guarantee you at least one regular customer!

I’m not the right person to ask for business advice – if I was I would probably run my own business already – offering the brands that aren’t already available in my homecountry (+ fighting against an unjust Valrhona monopoly). I have some reflections though:
- I guess you’re inspired by the film Chocolate? Amazing what chocolate can do to a small society …
- If even thinking about making cakes – go to Vienna. There are no other places for cakes like Vienna, both in terms of excellent recipes and total experience.
- I know Amedei has been a help in suggesting recipes to their partners. Probably other brands are of help too. I guess no one would like to see their chocolate being abused …

Good luck and thumbs up for the new girls on the (cocoa) block! I hope you keep us informed how things are going.
