Question for you guys…What chocolate company in the oldest continually operating chocolate manufacturer(bean to bar, including roasting) in the world? Guittard has the title in the USA but I was wondering if anyone could beat 1868 in the world that still controls the whole process?

I don't know for sure, but what about Lindt - I think they started in 1845???

Sulpice Debauve started his chocolate company in 1800 in Paris as the pharmacist to the King. Nowadays Debauve et Gallais (debauveetgallais.com) are the world's oldest operating chocolate company. They make really fine chocolate, not like Lindt now. It's worth to visit their shop in Paris on Rive Gauche near Mazarin's palace. (However it is to me still beyond Christian Constant in the experience.) I think they are also available in the US.

Are you sure Debauve et Gallais make their own chocolate from bean to bar, including roasting?

Now what about a company that is still owned by the original family? Sorry I should have mentioned that. Most companies have been bought and sold a few times or like Masur said, they don't roast anymore. Guittard is still family owned by the Guittard family and has been since 1868. Can any company beat that? I'm putting in some research on this one as well but I need some help to see who holds the title.

Why does it matter?

I know companies are fond of touting how long they have been doing something but it doesn't by default make a product any better. Just tells me they are quite good at making a product that sells reasonably well.

Yeah I am just interested. I like the history of chocolate as well as the growth and manufacturing. I just wanted to see if the USA could claim the oldest family owned chocolate company in the world. If anyone can show someone older than Guittard that is family old and still going from bean to bar I would love to hear it...
