If you’re in Canada, for some reason Dollarama has gotten bulk surplus bars of SB 41% Milk, 62% Semisweet and 70% Bittersweet. They’re selling it for a dollar a bar! I bought about 30 bars. At this price, I can bake with it. Each bar has soy lecithin and real vanilla.
On with the brief review:
My favorite bar is the 70%. It has a very clean ‘chocolate’ flavor – there’s very little acidity. I like acidity sometimes, when it reminds me of fruit (Chuao), less when it reminds me of sour milk (can’t remember the brand, either Pralus or Coppeneur). This bar is very inoffensive, there’s almost no bitterness and a lot of chocolate impact.
There’s something in this bar that doesn’t taste like chocolate. It’s maybe a slight floral note and I don’t like it. There’s slightly more fruity acid in this bar, which I don’t mind. And lastly, there’s a sticky sweet aftertaste which I don’t care for. It’s flavour just doesn’t line up with “chocolate” for me.
I’m slipping this one in, even though it contains “milk ingredients”. At first I thought I didn’t like the 60% because of the sweetness, but this bar is sweeter (of course) and I like it better. While it doesn’t taste of pure chocolate, it DOES taste very good. The strongest flavour here other than chocolate is actually caramel – almost like a dulce du leche flavor. I wonder if they’re caramelizing their milk ingredients.
All these bars are definitely worth the money at $1 a piece! But my fave is the 70%, followed by the milk bar.
