OfflineSeneca- Good article. My neighbour is a small scale sheep farmer and is ‘organic in spirit’ (see article)..he doesn’t belong to the Soil Association though. He wouldn’t want anyone going through his books and would not be able to justify the cost for doing something that he and other generations have been doing for years.
I think for a long time in this country (UK) ‘organic’ also meant better tasting or better quality food…which obviously it doesn’t. Big business soon changes this and anyone who has tasted a box of Duchy Originals chocolates will probably agree.
While I completely see the benefits to the farmers’ welfare and landscape for not using pesticides I don’t believe this is the main reason people buy in to organics. I believe those who buy organic products see it more as some kind of lifestyle choice.
I have no evidence for this apart from personal anecdotes and various press releases..here’s one.
