A friend brought me back some cocoa powder which she bought at a plantation in Venezuela. It is so much better than anything I’ve ever had! Searching the web I’ve found sources for beans and nibs, and fancy varietal bars, but nothing in between. I’m not prepared to get all the equipment to roast and grind my own, but it would be great to not have to have it shipped to Switzerland to be marked up first. Is there a channel for getting it direct, other than going down for a tour myself?

Unfortunately, you will have to roast and grind your own if you want to make your own cocoa powder. The reason why has mostly to do with the fact that chocolate is ground too finely to be pressed against a screen to squeeze out the cocoa butter. The particle sizes are so small that any screen that is fine enough to catch them will clog and then burst. So, you really want cocoa liquor that has about 100 micron size rather than the 20 micron (or less) size that is in commercial chocolate.
You may be able to buy what you are looking for from El Rey which is a Venezuelan chocolate company.
